The Paphos coastline is one of the best places in the Mediterranean for water sports. With over 300 days of sunshine a year, water temperatures reaching 28°C in summer, and underwater visibility routinely exceeding 30 metres, the conditions here are exceptional. Whether you're a first-time snorkeller or an experienced diver, a thrill-seeker on a jet ski or a family looking for a gentle paddleboard session, Paphos has you covered.
Scuba Diving — Why Paphos Is a World-Class Destination
Cyprus is consistently ranked among the top dive destinations in the Mediterranean, and the Paphos district has some of the island's finest sites. The water clarity is remarkable — visibility of 30-40 metres is common, and the sea is warm enough to dive comfortably from April to November without a thick wetsuit.
Several PADI-certified dive centres operate in Kato Paphos, offering everything from beginner "Discover Scuba" experiences to advanced certifications and guided dives for experienced divers.
- Cydive (Kato Paphos harbour) — One of the most established dive centres in Cyprus. PADI 5-Star rated. Offers beginner courses (EUR 65-80 for a Discover Scuba dive), Open Water certification (EUR 350-400, 3-4 days), and guided dives for certified divers (EUR 40-50 per dive).
- Dive Point (Coral Bay) — Smaller, more personal operation specialising in small groups. Excellent for beginners who want individual attention. Their reef dives from Coral Bay are particularly good.
- Easy Divers Cyprus — Based near the harbour, they run daily boat dives to the best sites along the coast. Good value for certified divers looking to explore multiple sites.
Best Dive Sites Near Paphos
The Paphos coast has a diverse range of dive sites, from shallow reef dives perfect for beginners to deeper wrecks and caves for advanced divers.
- The Amphorae Caves — A series of underwater caves and tunnels near the Sea Caves at Peyia. Ancient amphorae (clay storage jars) were found here, giving the site its name. Depth: 8-16m. Suitable for beginners with an instructor. The light filtering through cave openings creates magical photo opportunities.
- MMSS Vera K Wreck — A Lebanese cargo ship that sank in 1972, sitting upright in 11m of water near the Sea Caves. One of the most photogenic wreck dives in Cyprus — the hull is encrusted with marine life and surrounded by schools of fish. Accessible to Open Water certified divers.
- Jubilee Shoals — An underwater reef system about 2km offshore from Paphos harbour. Rich marine life, including grouper, barracuda, moray eels, and occasional sea turtles. Depth: 15-30m. For intermediate and advanced divers.
- St George's Island — A small island just offshore with excellent wall diving. The vertical drop-off is dramatic, with colourful sponges and sea fans. Depth: 10-40m. Suitable for various skill levels depending on the route.
- Manajin Reef — A beautiful coral garden in shallow water (5-12m) near Coral Bay. Perfect for beginners and snorkellers. Damselfish, wrasse, and octopus are regularly spotted here.
Snorkelling — The Free Water Sport
You don't need a certification or expensive equipment to explore the underwater world around Paphos. A basic mask and snorkel (available from beach shops for EUR 10-20, or from the apartment — just ask) opens up an entirely different dimension of the Mediterranean.
The best snorkelling spots in Paphos are along the rocky sections of coastline, where the sea floor is covered in boulders, crevices, and scattered seagrass beds that attract a surprising variety of marine life.
- Sea Caves (Peyia) — The most famous snorkelling spot near Paphos. Natural rock arches, caves, and crystal-clear water. Drive or bus to the Sea Caves viewpoint, then climb down to the water. The underwater visibility here is extraordinary.
- White River Beach — A rocky cove south of Coral Bay with excellent snorkelling directly from the shore. Damselfish, wrasse, octopus, and sea urchins are common. Bring water shoes.
- Lighthouse Beach rocks — The rocky coastline near the old Paphos lighthouse (20-minute walk from apartment) has surprisingly good snorkelling. Shallow, sheltered, and easy to access.

For adrenaline seekers, Paphos has all the usual Mediterranean water sports on offer. The main centres are at Coral Bay and along the Kato Paphos hotel beach strip. You'll find operators set up directly on the beach during summer months (May-October).
- Jet ski rental: EUR 40-60 for 15-20 minutes. Available at Coral Bay and the hotel beach areas. No licence required — you'll get a brief safety briefing before heading out.
- Parasailing: EUR 40-50 per person for a 10-minute flight. Tandem options available. The views of the Paphos coastline from 100m up are genuinely breathtaking.
- Banana boat / tube rides: EUR 10-15 per person. Great fun for families with older children. Available at Coral Bay beach.
- Flyboarding: EUR 60-80 for 15 minutes. The newer addition to the water sports scene — a water-powered jetpack that launches you above the surface. Harder than it looks, but hilarious to try.
Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP)
Paddleboarding has exploded in popularity in Paphos, and it's easy to see why. The sea is often glassy calm in the morning, the water is warm and clear, and paddling along the Paphos coastline with the castle and harbour in view is a genuinely beautiful experience.
SUP boards are available for rental at several locations along the Kato Paphos coast and at Coral Bay. A typical rental costs EUR 15-20 per hour. Most rental operators will give you a quick lesson if you've never tried before — it takes about 10 minutes to find your balance.
- Best time: Early morning (7:00-9:00am) when the sea is calmest. The wind typically picks up by late morning.
- Best location: The sheltered bay between the harbour and Alykes Beach. Calm water, beautiful views, and close to the apartment.
- SUP yoga: Some operators offer guided SUP yoga sessions — yoga on the paddleboard in calm water. Surprisingly meditative once you stop wobbling.
Boat Trips & Sailing
Several operators run boat trips from Paphos harbour, ranging from short coastal cruises to full-day adventures up to the Akamas Peninsula or the Blue Lagoon. These are some of the most memorable experiences you can have in Paphos.
- Blue Lagoon cruise (full day) — The most popular boat trip from Paphos. A catamaran or motor yacht takes you up the coast to the Blue Lagoon at Akamas — a bay of impossibly turquoise water. Includes swimming stops, lunch, and drinks. EUR 40-60 per person. Book a day ahead in summer.
- Sunset cruise (2-3 hours) — A shorter evening cruise along the Kato Paphos coastline. Champagne, canapes, and a front-row seat to one of the Mediterranean's most beautiful sunsets. EUR 30-45 per person.
- Fishing trips — Half-day deep-sea fishing trips departing from the harbour. Catch typically includes bream, amberjack, and tuna. EUR 50-80 per person including equipment and bait.
- Private yacht charter — For a special occasion, several companies offer private yacht charters. A half-day on a sailing yacht for 4-6 people costs around EUR 400-600 including a skipper.
Kayaking Along the Coast
Sea kayaking is one of the most peaceful ways to explore the Paphos coastline. Several operators offer guided kayak tours that take you along sea caves, past rocky headlands, and into hidden coves inaccessible by land.
- Guided sea cave tour: A 2-3 hour guided kayak tour from Coral Bay to the Sea Caves and back. EUR 35-50 per person including equipment and guide. No experience necessary.
- Kayak rental: Single kayaks EUR 10-15/hour, doubles EUR 15-20/hour. Available at Coral Bay and some Kato Paphos beaches.
- Sunset kayak tours: The most atmospheric option — paddling along the coast as the sun sets behind you. Several operators run these from May to October.
