Choosing the right beach makes or breaks a family day out. Paphos has dozens of beaches along its coastline, but not all of them are suited to young children. Some are rocky platforms better for snorkelling than sandcastles, others have sudden drop-offs or strong currents. We've spent years testing every stretch of coast with families and their children — here are the beaches where you can genuinely relax while your kids play safely.
Coral Bay — The Gold Standard for Families
If you only visit one beach during your stay, make it Coral Bay. This wide, horseshoe-shaped bay about 12 kilometres northwest of Kato Paphos is the most popular family beach in the entire Paphos district — and for good reason. The sand is soft and golden, the water is calm and crystal clear, and it stays shallow enough for toddlers to wade for 20-30 metres out from shore.
Coral Bay holds Blue Flag status, meaning it meets strict European standards for water quality, safety, environmental management, and facilities. Lifeguards are on duty from June through October, and the beach is cleaned daily during the season.
- Sand quality: Fine, golden sand — ideal for sandcastle building. No sharp rocks in the main swimming area
- Water depth: Very gradual slope. Children can stand comfortably for a long way out. Virtually no waves on calm days
- Facilities: Sunbeds and umbrellas (around EUR 7.50 per set), public toilets and showers, changing areas, wheelchair access ramp
- Food: Several tavernas and cafes directly on the beach. Piasmata and Coral Bay Beach Bar are reliable choices with kids menus
- Parking: Large free car park a 2-minute walk from the sand. Fills up by 11am in July and August — arrive early
- Getting there: Bus 615 from Kato Paphos harbour (runs every 15-20 minutes, EUR 1.50 per person). By car, about 20 minutes from the apartment
Alykes Beach (SODAP) — The Closest Family Option
When you want a beach without the drive, Alykes is your answer. Located in the heart of Kato Paphos, roughly a 10-minute walk from the apartment, this sheltered cove is the most convenient family beach option. It won't win any awards for dramatic scenery, but it delivers exactly what families with young children need: calm water, basic facilities, and no hassle getting there.
Alykes is actually a series of small coves rather than one long stretch. The main bathing area has a mix of packed sand and fine pebble, with a gentle entry into the water. The bay is naturally protected from wind and currents, making it feel like a private swimming spot on quieter days.
- Sand quality: Mix of sand and fine pebble. Water shoes recommended for comfortable entry
- Water depth: Shallow and calm. The natural rock formations create a semi-enclosed swimming area — almost like a natural pool
- Facilities: Sunbeds available (around EUR 5-7 per set), a small beach cafe, toilet facilities. Simpler than Coral Bay but perfectly adequate
- Lifeguards: Seasonal (summer months). Check the flag system — green means safe, red means no swimming
- Best for: Morning swims with toddlers, quick afternoon dips, families who don't want to drive anywhere
The SODAP stretch just north of Alykes offers a similar experience with slightly more space. Both areas are popular with local Cypriot families — always a reliable indicator of a good beach for children.
Vrysoudia Beach — Blue Flag & Family-Friendly
Vrysoudia sits right in the Kato Paphos tourist area, within walking distance of the harbour and the Tombs of the Kings road. It holds Blue Flag certification and offers a well-organised beach experience with lifeguards, sunbed hire, showers, and toilet facilities.
The beach is a mix of sand and pebble, with a relatively gentle entry into the water. It's not as naturally sheltered as Coral Bay, so on windier days the waves can pick up a little — but on the majority of days between May and October, the water is calm and inviting.
- Blue Flag status: Yes — water quality tested regularly, lifeguards on duty, accessible facilities
- Sand quality: Coarser sand with some pebble. Water shoes advisable for children
- Facilities: Full setup — sunbeds, umbrellas, showers, toilets, nearby restaurants and cafes
- Location advantage: Walking distance from many Kato Paphos hotels and the apartment. No car needed
- Nearby: The Paphos Archaeological Park and harbour area are a short walk away — easy to combine a morning beach visit with an afternoon of sightseeing

Check AvailabilityLighthouse Beach (Faros) — Quiet & Uncrowded
If the main beaches feel too busy, head to Lighthouse Beach. Located near the Paphos lighthouse at the western end of the Kato Paphos coastline, this is a quieter, less developed option that appeals to families who prefer space over facilities.
Lighthouse Beach is a series of small sandy patches between low rock formations. The water is exceptionally clear — some of the clearest along the Paphos coast — and the rocky pools at low tide are a natural playground for curious children. Crabs, small fish, sea anemones, and occasionally octopuses can be spotted in the shallows.
- Sand quality: Small sandy pockets between rocks. Not a long beach — more a collection of intimate coves
- Water depth: Varies. The sandy entry points offer gentle access, but the rocky areas require supervision for young children
- Facilities: Minimal — no sunbed hire, no cafe directly on the beach. Bring everything you need: towels, shade, water, snacks
- Best for: Rock pooling, snorkelling (age 6+), families with older children who enjoy exploring, photography
- Parking: Small informal parking area near the lighthouse. Easy access on foot from the Tombs of the Kings area
The lighthouse itself makes for a lovely backdrop, and the coastal path here is flat and pushchair-friendly. On quieter weekdays outside of July-August, you might have entire coves to yourself.
Geroskipou Municipal Beach — Space to Spread Out
Geroskipou Beach is the locals' choice for a proper day at the seaside. Located about 15 minutes east of the apartment on the road towards Limassol, this long stretch of dark volcanic sand offers more space than the Kato Paphos beaches and has excellent facilities for families.
The beach holds Blue Flag status, with lifeguards stationed along the main bathing area from June to October. What makes it particularly good for families is the adjacent public playground — a proper, well-maintained playground with climbing frames, swings, and slides. When children tire of the sea, the playground provides a welcome change of activity without leaving the beach area.
- Blue Flag status: Yes — clean water, safety standards, accessible facilities
- Sand quality: Dark volcanic sand, coarser than Coral Bay but comfortable. The colour absorbs heat — in peak summer, the sand can be hot underfoot at midday
- Water depth: Gradual entry, reasonable waves. A touch more lively than Coral Bay — fine for children who can swim, less ideal for very young toddlers on windy days
- Playground: Free public playground adjacent to the beach. Shaded seating areas for parents nearby
- Facilities: Sunbeds, umbrellas, showers, toilets, several cafes and kiosks along the promenade
- Getting there: Bus 631 from Kato Paphos (EUR 1.50). By car, about 15 minutes with free parking
Beach Safety Tips for Families
The Mediterranean around Paphos is generally very safe for swimming, but a few practical precautions will keep your family's beach days worry-free:
- Flag system: All lifeguarded beaches use the international flag system. Green = safe to swim. Yellow = caution, swim with care. Red = no swimming. Always check the flag before entering the water with children
- Sun protection: The Cypriot sun is significantly stronger than northern Europe, even on overcast days. Factor 50 sunscreen for children, reapplied every 2 hours and after swimming. UV rashguards are better than sunscreen for prolonged water play. Wide-brimmed hats are essential
- Hydration: Children dehydrate quickly in the heat. Bring more water than you think you'll need. Freeze water bottles overnight — they'll slowly melt and stay cold through the morning
- Shade hours: Avoid direct sun between 12:00pm and 3:00pm, especially with children under 5. Use an umbrella, a beach tent, or take a lunch break at a shaded restaurant during peak hours
- Sea urchins: Present on rocky sections of most Paphos beaches. Water shoes eliminate the risk almost entirely. If a child does step on one, pharmacies sell urchin spine removal kits — but prevention is much easier than treatment
- Jellyfish: Uncommon but occasionally present in late summer. If you see purple flags flying on the beach, jellyfish have been spotted. Stings are painful but rarely dangerous — vinegar (available from beach bars) is the standard first aid treatment
What to Pack for a Family Beach Day
After dozens of beach trips with visiting families, here's our tried-and-tested packing list:
- Essentials: Factor 50 sunscreen, water shoes, hats, swimwear, towels, reusable water bottles (refill at beach cafes for free)
- Sun protection: UV rashguards for children, a beach umbrella or pop-up shade tent (available at Paphos shops for EUR 15-25), sunglasses
- Snacks: Fresh fruit (watermelon stays cold if you cut it at home and bring it in a cool bag), crackers, cheese, breadsticks. Avoids overpriced beach kiosk snacks
- Entertainment: Bucket and spade, snorkelling gear for older children, a small net for rock pooling, an inflatable ball
- Comfort: A beach mat or blanket (sand can be hot), a change of clothes for the drive home, wet bags for sandy swimwear
- First aid: After-sun lotion, basic plasters, antihistamine cream for insect bites or minor stings
Most of these items can be bought cheaply in Kato Paphos if you don't want to fill your suitcase. The shops along Tombs of the Kings road and near the harbour sell beach toys, water shoes, inflatables, and sun protection at reasonable prices.
