Paphos is one of the most family-friendly destinations in the Mediterranean. Safe, affordable, with excellent healthcare, warm weather from March to November, and an attitude towards children that can only be described as genuinely welcoming — not just tolerated, but actively celebrated. Cypriots adore kids, and you'll feel it everywhere, from restaurant staff pulling up highchairs without being asked to strangers smiling at your toddler in the supermarket queue. Here's our complete guide to making the most of Paphos with children of all ages.
Best Family Beaches
Not all Paphos beaches are created equal when it comes to kids. The coast here ranges from rugged rocky platforms (great for snorkelling, less great for toddlers) to sheltered sandy bays with gentle, shallow water. Here are the ones we recommend to families:
Coral Bay — The undisputed number one family beach in the Paphos district. A wide crescent of golden sand with calm, shallow water that stays wadeable for 20-30 metres out. Sunbeds and umbrellas available for hire (around EUR 7.50 for a set), toilets, showers, and several tavernas right on the beach. Lifeguards on duty in season. About 20 minutes by car or bus from the apartment.
Alykes Beach (SODAP) — Much closer to the apartment (about 10 minutes' walk) and a great option when you don't want to travel far. It's a small, sheltered cove with a mix of sand and fine pebble. The water is clear and calm, and the beach has sunbeds, a cafe, and toilet facilities. Less crowded than Coral Bay and perfectly adequate for a morning or afternoon with small children.
Geroskipou Municipal Beach — About 15 minutes east of the apartment. A long stretch of dark sand with Blue Flag status, lifeguards, and good facilities. The water is clean and reasonably calm. There's a playground adjacent to the beach and several cafes within walking distance. A solid all-round family choice.
- Water shoes: We strongly recommend water shoes for children (and adults) at any Paphos beach. Even the sandy beaches can have rocky patches at the water's edge. Available cheaply at any beachwear shop in town.
- Sun protection: The Cypriot sun is intense, especially between June and September. Factor 50 sunscreen, hats, and a UV rashguard for children are essential. Seek shade between 12:00-3:00pm.
- Beach toys: Available at shops throughout Kato Paphos for a few euros. No need to pack them in your suitcase.
Paphos Zoo — A Genuine Highlight
Paphos Zoo (officially Pafos Zoo) is one of the finest small zoos in Europe — and that's not local bias speaking. Set in beautifully landscaped gardens about 15 kilometres from the apartment, it's home to over 1,200 animals across more than 200 species, with a particular strength in birds (the parrot and bird-of-prey collections are exceptional).
What makes it special is the combination of well-designed enclosures, mature tropical gardens, and an intimate scale that never feels overwhelming for young children. You can see everything in 3-4 hours without rushing, and there are shaded areas and rest spots throughout.
- Highlights: Giraffe feeding (extra charge, worth every cent for the look on your child's face), white lions, the penguin enclosure, the bird show (daily, check times), and the reptile house.
- Entry: Adults around EUR 18, children (2-12) around EUR 10. Under 2s free. Prices may vary — check their website for current rates.
- Food: There's a restaurant and several snack kiosks inside the zoo. The food is decent and reasonably priced. You're also welcome to bring your own picnic.
- Best time: Arrive at opening (9:00am) to see the animals at their most active before the heat sets in. The zoo is well-shaded but summer afternoons can still be very warm.
- Getting there: 20-minute drive from the apartment. Free parking on site. No public bus service — you'll need a car or taxi.
Paphos Aquarium
The Paphos Municipal Aquarium sits right in Kato Paphos, about a 15-minute walk from the apartment. It's not a large aquarium by international standards, but for families with younger children it's a worthwhile visit — especially on a hot afternoon when you need an air-conditioned break from the sun.
The aquarium features freshwater and saltwater tanks displaying local Mediterranean species as well as tropical fish, a crocodile section, and a small penguin exhibit. Children particularly enjoy the touch pool where they can handle starfish and sea cucumbers under supervision.
- Duration: About 60-90 minutes for a thorough visit
- Entry: Adults around EUR 9, children around EUR 5
- Tip: Combine it with a walk along the harbour and an ice cream at one of the waterfront gelaterias
Aphrodite Waterpark
For children aged 4 and up, Aphrodite Waterpark is likely to be the highlight of the entire holiday. Located in Kato Paphos (about a 10-minute drive from the apartment), it's a well-maintained waterpark with slides ranging from gentle family rides to genuinely thrilling high-speed tubes.
The park has a good balance of attractions for different ages:
- For little ones (under 6): A dedicated children's area with shallow pools, mini slides, water jets, and tipping buckets. Safe and enclosed — you can relax on a nearby sunbed while they play.
- For older kids (6-12): The multi-lane racer slides, the lazy river (perfect for all ages), and the wave pool are the big draws. The mat racer slides are competitive and endlessly repeatable.
- For teenagers: The high-speed body slides and the kamikaze drop slides provide genuine thrills. Long enough queues to give parents a break between rides.
- For parents: Sunbeds (free with entry), a bar serving cold drinks and simple food, and the knowledge that your children are thoroughly entertained.
- Entry: Adults around EUR 30-35, children (3-12) around EUR 20-25. Under 3s free. Family tickets available.
- Season: Open from approximately May to October (weather dependent)
- What to bring: Towels, high-factor sunscreen (reapply frequently — water washes it off fast), water shoes, and a waterproof phone case
- Food: On-site restaurants are adequate but not exceptional. You can bring your own snacks and water.

Check AvailabilityMini-Golf, Go-Karting & Arcades
For those evenings when the beach has lost its appeal and the kids need burning off, Paphos has several options:
Mini-golf: There are a couple of mini-golf courses in the Kato Paphos and Coral Bay area. They're simple but well-maintained, lit for evening play, and affordable (around EUR 6-8 per person). A great activity for the post-beach, pre-dinner slot between 5:00-7:00pm.
Go-karting: Located on the road towards Coral Bay, the go-kart track offers different kart sizes for adults, teenagers, and children (minimum height restrictions apply, usually around 140cm for adult karts, smaller karts available for younger kids). Sessions run around EUR 10-15 for a 10-minute drive. Helmets provided.
Arcades and entertainment: Several small amusement arcades are dotted along the Kato Paphos tourist strip — nothing spectacular, but enough to keep children entertained for an hour. Some of the larger hotels also have game rooms that are open to non-guests for a fee.
Cinema: The Kings Avenue Mall (about 10 minutes' drive from the apartment) has a multi-screen cinema showing English-language films. A welcome option on the rare rainy day or when everyone needs a break from outdoor activities.
Child-Friendly Restaurants
Almost every restaurant in Paphos is child-friendly. This is not a city where you'll get disapproving looks for bringing a toddler to dinner at 8pm — quite the opposite. Cypriots eat late, eat communally, and consider children a natural part of the dining experience. High chairs appear without asking, staff dote on babies, and the pace of dining is relaxed enough that nobody minds if your child takes 45 minutes to eat their chips.
That said, some restaurants are particularly well-suited to families:
- Harbour tavernas — The open-air waterfront setting means children can move around freely without disturbing other diners. The view of the castle and the fishing boats provides built-in entertainment. Portions are large and shareable.
- Souvlaki shops — The perfect family fast food. A pitta wrap with souvlaki, chips, and salad costs EUR 3-5, arrives in minutes, and is universally loved by children. No booking required, no waiting.
- Fish tavernas at Coral Bay — Several beachside restaurants serve simple, fresh food with outdoor seating right on the sand. Children can play on the beach between courses.
- Pizza restaurants — Several good Italian-Cypriot restaurants in Kato Paphos serve pizza, pasta, and other familiar options for cautious eaters. Mezzanine in the old town is particularly good.
Practical Tips for Families
Paphos is well-equipped for families with young children. Here's what you need to know:
Pharmacies: Well-stocked pharmacies (farmakeio) are found throughout Kato Paphos, with at least two within a 5-minute walk of the apartment. Pharmacists speak English and can advise on common childhood ailments — coughs, sunburn, stomach upsets, insect bites. Over-the-counter children's medicines (Calpol, Nurofen equivalents) are readily available. A 24-hour emergency pharmacy rota operates across the city — check the list posted on any pharmacy door.
Medical care: Paphos General Hospital has a paediatric department and an accident & emergency unit. For non-emergencies, there are several private clinics and English-speaking doctors in Kato Paphos. Travel insurance is essential — while emergency care is available to EU citizens with EHIC/GHIC cards, comprehensive cover gives peace of mind.
Supermarkets: Papantoniou (350m from the apartment) and AlphaMega are the main chains. Both are well-stocked with international brands, baby supplies, nappies, formula, and children's snacks. Fresh fruit here is exceptional — even fussy eaters tend to devour Cypriot watermelon, grapes, and peaches.
Car seats: If you're hiring a car, request a car seat at the time of booking. Availability can be limited in peak season. Alternatively, bring your own travel car seat — many lightweight, portable models fold flat for airport luggage.
Pushchairs and pavements: Kato Paphos pavements are generally reasonable but not perfect. A lightweight, robust pushchair handles the terrain better than a large travel system. The harbour promenade and coastal path are pushchair-friendly.
- Tap water: Safe to drink but most people prefer bottled. Large bottles (1.5L) cost around EUR 0.50 from supermarkets.
- Mosquitoes: Present in summer, especially near gardens. Bring or buy repellent and consider plug-in devices for the apartment (available at any supermarket).
- Language: English is widely spoken in Kato Paphos. You'll have no communication difficulties at restaurants, shops, pharmacies, or medical facilities.
Why Lovely Ap Works for Families
We designed Lovely Ap to be genuinely practical for the way people actually travel — and that very much includes families. Here's what makes it work:
Full kitchen: A properly equipped kitchen with full-size fridge, oven, hob, microwave, toaster, and all the utensils you need. Prepare baby food, heat bottles, cook familiar meals for fussy eaters, or simply make breakfast at home and save the dining-out budget for evenings. The kitchen has everything a family needs — from a sharp knife that actually cuts to enough plates for everyone.
Washing machine: With children, laundry is not optional. The apartment has a washing machine — throw in sandy towels, sunscreen-streaked t-shirts, and waterpark swimwear without worrying about finding a launderette or paying hotel laundry prices.
Location: Central Kato Paphos means you're within walking distance of the harbour, beaches, supermarkets, pharmacies, and restaurants. No need to load tired children into a car for every meal or errand. The Papantoniou supermarket is literally 350 metres away — you can nip out for milk while the kids are in the bath.
Space: Unlike a hotel room, the apartment gives your family room to breathe. A separate living area means parents can have a glass of wine after the children are asleep without whispering in the dark. The balcony is perfect for morning coffee while the kids watch cartoons inside.
Parking: Free private parking means no circling the block with a car full of tired children. Load up the car with beach gear, water, snacks, and a pushchair without the stress of carrying everything from a distant car park.
Value: Compared to a family hotel room, a self-catering apartment typically saves families 30-50% on holiday costs. Cook breakfast and lunch at home, eat out for dinner, and you'll find Paphos remarkably affordable.
